But this didn’t help either. Most of the children were not following. By that time I understood that I had skipped a stage. As a matter of fact, I had skipped more than one. It was not only the concept of a yet unknown relation between two elements that was diﬃcult for the children. It was also the concept of having 4 more than or greater by 4 than itself that was unfamiliar, and a ﬁrst-grade teacher should have been well aware of that fact. This is not a concept the child encounters in his everyday life.
Is there any sophistication to such calculations? None at all. The caveman did not need to send his children to school to learn this. All the knowledge required here is that the meaning of addition is “to join” — the result is achieved by joining the two sets of lines. No calculation is required.
