Using her experience in network development, she worked closely with the Ministry of Health and the HPV Technical Advisory Group to successfully launch HPV vaccination following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Merck Sharp and Dohme and the Government of Uganda. Prior to joining Merck, she served as the National Coordinator of the Medicines Transparency Alliance—the local multistakeholder coalition in Uganda. She has also served in various capacities in Population Services International (PSI), a leading international non-governmental organization.
In Tanzania, as in other parts of the world, medicines have variable and often high prices, and are unaffordable for large sections of the population. The high burden of paying for essential medicines falls disproportionately on poor households, resulting in preventable morbidity and mortality. However, the issue of improving access to medicines is complex and extends far beyond their availability, and even beyond the health care system. Many different factors and causes must be taken into account and targeted.
